The open beta for Elite Dangerous: Beyond – Chapter One is now up for grabs to all PC players, Frontier Developments has confirmed. The teaser is available free of charge and offers a tantalizing glimpse at the space MMO’s third season. Chapter One picks up after the Thargoids dealt a crippling blow to human’s starsports, and bolsters the story-driven epic with a host of new gameplay features for battle-hungry players, traders, and explorers alike....

The novel Roadside Picnic was published all the way back in 1972 in the Soviet Union. It was a story about extraterrestrial beings that left behind Visitation Sites filled with strange phenomena and otherwordly forces. Coincidentally, the novel became highly influential, leading to direct and loose adaptations (i.e., the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series referenced some key elements). Then, there’s Encased, a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic RPG from developer Dark Crystal Games and publisher Prime Matter....

The European Union has voted to adopt a single charger design for use across all portable games consoles, smartphones, tablets and laptops sold in the region. Technology manufacturers will now be required to use USB-C charging ports in all smartphones and tablets sold in the region from 2024, and in laptops from 2026. Mice, keyboards, headphones are also included. As previously reported, the UK decided to opt out out of being included in this initiative when it was first proposed, despite its aims to cut electronic waste and generally make things a bit easier for those with a drawer full of random Lightning cables, micro-USB and mini-USB wires....

Video game movies starring iconic mascot characters are getting bigger: Detective Pikachu did decently, and Sonic the Hedgehog has received favorable reviews. Hopefully, these films are paving the way for Mario’s return to the big screen; two years ago, Nintendo announced it had partnered with Illumination (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets) to make an animated Mario movie. Since then, details have been incredibly scarce, almost nonexistent. There have been no supposed leaks, nor notable rumors....

Farming Simulator 22 has received its first big release of add-on content — the Platinum Edition. The new DLC gives players access to the new map of Silverrun Forest, which contains acres of forest areas that are prime for logging. The Platinum Edition also introduces new fleet of vehicles, as well as tools to get the job done. The Silverrun Forest map is nestled in the Pacific northwest. It’s home to a variety of different tree species, which run along throughout its many hills....

EA Sports’ annual football series will, unsurprisingly, be returning on 27 September in the form of FIFA 17. Traditionally, GamesCom is the period when EA start releasing a deeper look at gameplay, but since E3 2016 plenty of details have been revealed. Let this be a lesson: Death never gives up. New Line Cinema, now a subsidiary of WarnerMedia, is attempting to cheat death one more time and bringing back the Final Destination franchise. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, writers of four of the Saw movies, will pen the script. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news. The first Final Destination film debuted back in 2000 and told the story of a group of high school students who elect not to board a plane to Paris after one of them has a premonition the plane will explode mid-air and kill everyone aboard....

It’s no secret that Square Enix has been pushing into the mobile market pretty heavily, but while some games have seen tremendous success, others, less so. Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier was a unique take on the mobile battle royale genre, with players being able to customize their own SOLDIERs and battle each other in the arena. Unfortunately, Square Enix has announced today that the game will be shutting down in January 2023....

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is due to be released on September 3rd: incredibly soon after the initial announcement. However, the fans will only be able to buy a digital copy of the game, as it has been confirmed that it will not receive a physical edition. A multitude of old Final Fantasy titles have been remastered for modern systems over the past few years, with Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, and Final Fantasy XII now all available on modern systems....

There hasn’t been a better time than now to start out in Final Fantasy XIV. The incredibly good MMO is, as of the time of writing, about to receive its major 5.3 update. Aside from finishing off the Shadowbringers expansion storyline, it also massively revamps the Free Trial system and streamlines the early content. Fire Emblem: Three Houses has officially become “four houses” with the recently released Cindered Shadows DLC.
