Despite the sudden and unexpected explosion in the popularity of science fiction films in the early 1950s, a number of major studios were resistant to the trend, considering the genre to be B-film fodder at best, and at worst childish gutter trash that was beneath them. When it became apparent just how much money could be made with sci-fi, however, most eventually relented. One neat trick that was used to justify taking the dive while preserving a bit of pride and self-respect was to produce lavish, big budget Technicolor adaptations of established sci-fi literary classics....

Many may recall the meme that arose from Division 2’s pre-release Gamescom 2018 trailer’s police “POLCE” car. It was a trick of the angle, as the door was actually open, but the internet ran with it. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the newest movie in the long-running franchise, and it’s just been announced that Crunchyroll and Toei Animation are bringing the movie to theatres globally this summer. It will be distributed in North America by Crunchyroll but, internationally, the distribution will be a joint effort between Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment. A June 11 release date was already revealed for Japanese audiences, but it’s not likely that the movie will be available to watch in theatres across the world on that exact same date....

When Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was first announced, it was unclear if its story would extend beyond the Frieza Saga. Then later when it was revealed that Cell would be in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, fans were still unsure if the game would also include the Buu Saga. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the new JRPG from the creators of Suikoden, has surpassed an astonishing £1.1 million in funding (at the time of writing). Yoshitaka Murayama and Junko Kawano, of the Suikoden series, promise a “traditional” JRPG in Eiyuden Chronicle, where turn-based battles will play out in beautifully composed cutscenes. With a six character battle system featuring “painstakingly created 2D sprites and gorgeous 3D backgrounds,” the game is certainly one to watch, if not play....

The Epic Games Store and its shaky Mega Sale are back making headlines. This time, it appears that the storefront has been blocking people who have been making too many purchases too quickly. The reason: it’s all a part of the Epic Store’s “aggressive fraud rules,” which has been flagging users as possible fraudsters. “This was a result of our aggressive fraud rules,” Nick Chester, senior PR for Epic, told GameRevolution....

This year reveals one very interesting insight; most Americans are gamers now, and most gamers have consoles. Who knew? It seems the hype for gaming on mobile has been seriously overestimated. Even as smartphone gaming increased 22 % and tablet 37 % year on year, 51 % of US households own a console, two on average....

The development of Project Nova, the codename for CCP Games’ Eve Online multiplayer first-person shooter spin-off title, has been in limbo for several years and now the death knell for the project has officially been rung. CCP Grendel announced on Reddit that the development of the Eve Online multiplayer spin-off Project Nova, which was originally scheduled to enter a closed alpha test in November 2018, has instead been permanently shut down....

Microsoft has updated the list of games that are receiving Xbox One X enhancements. These games are in addition to the 40-odd that were confirmed as getting enhancements at E3 2017, so all together Microsoft has got over 100 games confirmed as getting 4K support on the Xbox One X. This additional list will hopefully go to placating some of those feeling a bit down by the current absence of actual Xbox One X launch titles (what’s wrong with Super Lucky’s Tale, folks?...

The developer behind the EverQuest and PlanetSide franchises is feeling a bit broken up. Well, actually it’s literally broken up. Daybreak Game Company announced a new initiative today — “Franchise First” — that splits the developer up into three new studios. These development houses will focus on the expansion of Daybreak’s legacy franchises, including EverQuest, DC Universe Online, and PlanetSide. From Daybreak come Dimensional Ink Games, Rogue Planet Games, and Darkpaw Games....

F1 22 has been released and for the fans of the motorsport and the game, “it’s light out and away we go”. The game offers a variety of game modes along with the career mode and the solo Grand Prix. Custom Settings enabled can include free practices and qualifying in Solo Grand Prix, they are already there in the Career Mode. While free practice is the best way to go forward for qualifying and the race, players can simulate it due to lack of time....

It is very easy for some people to get sucked into social gaming. The games are free and integrate with the features of Facebook. Social gaming has taken off in the past few years, and the games have become more and more elaborate with each developed title....

Mediatonic has announced that Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout‘s jungle-themed Season 5 will launch tomorrow. A livestream from the studio earlier today showed off the new content, following the theme reveal last week. Beans will get to tussle on six new events, including Treetop Tumble and Lily Leapers; a pair of new 64-player gauntlet races with several routes for players to take. The update will also introduce limited time Duos and Trios mode and five new obstacles—including charging rhinos—added to existing courses....
