Final Fantasy 16 will not have an open world. Producer Naoki Yoshida confirmed the news in an interview with IGN, although he said that recent open world games have provided “inspiration”. “We’ve found in our extensive user research that many of the younger generation of gamers have never played a Final Fantasy or don’t have any interest in the series. To create a game that might excite and resonate not only with our core fans, but also with that new generation, we played a lot of games ourselves, and so yes, in [Final Fantasy 16] you’ll find inspiration from recent triple-A open world RPGs,” said Yoshida....

Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds will be heading to version 1.0 in the not too distant future and with it will come the new Desert map. A set of five new desert map shots have surfaced courtesy of Nvidia who are keen to point out that 10 series GPUs will manage a steady 60FPS with settings on Ultra. The new shots are below showing pretty much what we have seen before of the new map but this time from different locations....

Against all odds, Sonic the Hedgehog’s movie is actually getting good reviews. Not rave reviews, mind you, but it’s being billed as a solid family film worth seeing. Following in the frosty footsteps of games like Destiny 2, For Honor is the latest game to get a Winter event, and this one’s entitled the Frost Wind Festival. From this Thursday, December 21 players will find the battlefields given a snowy tinge and be able to access a new 2V2 mode called Ice Brawlers. As the name suggests, combatants will be fighting it out on a lake of thin ice, where one wrong move could have consequences far worse than Bambi sliding around on the stuff....

Sky Sports is reportedly no longer working with streamer IShowSpeed after news of his misogynistic, racist and abusive comments reached executives at the channel. Until recently the streamer, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr, was working with Sky Sports, helping with its broadcasts of matches for the English Premier League. However, the channel has now removed almost all traces of the streamer from its social media feeds (although some still remain)....

Square Enix has shared more news regarding its fighting game Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. At the end of the Smash Bros. final at Evo 2017, Square showed a new trailer for the game, and announced that there’d be a closed beta happening later this summer. Every Cloud, right? Everyone that attended Evo 2017 will be receiving a code to enter, but for those who didn’t go, you can still register on the official Dissidia site for a chance to get your hands on a beta code....

The Google Stadia version of Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will support cross-play when it launches for the streaming platform later this month. Stadia’s game addition has been on a slow boil since it dropped last year but things look to be picking up, with the likes of Image & Form Games’ SteamWorld series and Croteam’s Serious Sam - the latter this Tuesday - having become available recently. As for huge titles, Stadia hasn’t announced any in a while....

A group of industry veterans including Dragon Age creator Mike Laidlaw have set up their own game development studio in Canada known as Yellow Brick Games. Laidlaw has joined Thomas Giroux, Jeff Skalski and Frederic St-Laurent B in founding the new startup, whom have themselves previously worked on Ubisoft titles such as The Crew and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate to name a few. The new company intends to “further cement the region’s leading role in the global entertainment scene” with a new, as yet unrevealed project already in the works with a team of 15 on it....

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has received new trailer that reveals the Buu arc, and Bandai Namco has announced that the game will be coming to PC and consoles in 2020 (via WccfTech). From the Saiyan Saga to the End of ‘Z’ Saga, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot dares to break the mould of its previous fighting game iterations. Kakarot will be a role-playing game and players will take on the roles of all its protagonists from humble beginnings to the iconic, epic showdowns....

Techland has promised five years of post-launch support for upcoming open world zombie game Dying Light 2: Stay Human. The developer made the claim on the game’s official Twitter account over the weekend. It said “We guarantee to expand the world of Dying Light 2: Stay Human for at least 5 years post launch with new stories, locations, in-game events and all the fun stuff you love.” From the sounds of it then, there’ll be even more than the boasted 500 hours of content the studio previously claimed the game will have....

EA recently held their shareholder call on Tuesday where a lot of things got discussed, such as the revelation that there’s a new Dragon Age in the works and that there’s a mysterious new Battlefield that will release in fall at the expense of Anthem releasing in early 2019....

Elden Ring revolves around an enchanting and mystical open world with a plethora of bosses. Fortnite continues to be a fixture of England’s World Cup squad, four years after the popular battle royale’s celebration dances became a common sight on Russia’s pitches. This week, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was shown footage of himself lugging a monogrammed computer case to 2022’s controversial Qatar tournament, as part of an official interview released on the England squad YouTube channel. Pickford was asked what he was getting up to during his downtime - and, amongst other things, eventually revealed he was still hooked to Fortnite....

Ant-Man and the Wasp star Evangeline Lilly is opening up about her time starring in TV phenomenon Lost and it sounds like it wasn’t always the positive, enriching experience one would hope. Lilly spoke with Lost fan podcast The LOST Boys and detailed the time she felt cornered into a partial nude scene in the show’s third season. “In season three, I’d had a bad experience on set with being basically cornered into doing a scene partially naked, and I felt had no choice in the matter,” Lilly told interviewer Jacob Stolworthy....

Multiplayer battle-royale gameshow Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout has announced that it’ll be getting a little chilly in its third season as it revealed the title and theme: Winter Knockout. The announcement was made following a mini-ARG set by the game’s social media accounts, challenging the community to find pieces to a jigsaw puzzle across various parts of the internet. It’s no secret that Mediatonic’s Fall Guys has proven insanely popular, and alas with that popularity has also come hackers, particularly on the PC version of the game. Thankfully, it seems like there’s some progress coming on that front soon.
