Many modern role-playing games have begun to include options to engage in a romantic relationship with some of the game’s characters. The Dragon Age series, like BioWare’s other epic Mass Effect, is one of these games. No matter what type of character you play there will be a romance option. Female characters have more romance options with six; male characters have five romance options (four without the Trespasser expansion). Update, 2.30pm, July 31: When Square Enix announced Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, it didn’t specify which platforms the game would be released for in the West. Today, Sony has confirmed that the game will come to the West for PS4. It released the same announcement that was previously shown, but this time with PlayStation branding. It’ll be interesting to see if the West will receive the same versions as Japan, which saw the game release on PS4 and 3DS at the weekend, with a Switch version to follow....

FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed action-RPG Elden Ring has enjoyed a hugely positive market debut in the UK. According to data supplied to Gamesindustry.biz by GSD, the game is the biggest UK video game launch since Call of Duty: Vanguard. Its sales are more than double that of Horizon: Forbidden West and is the biggest selling franchise at launch outside of Call of Duty and FIFA since Red Dead Redemption 2. Gamesindustry.biz notes that GSD data highlights digital downloads accounted for over 68% of Elden Ring’s sales....

Embracer Group is to buy Middle-earth Enterprises, which will give the Swedish conglomerate the rights to JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. In a press release, Embracer discussed its process of buying Middle-earth Enterprises, although it did not disclose the sum of this deal, citing “commercial reasons” for this decision. This deal will mean that Embracer will own the rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and stage productions relating to Tolkien’s works....

In response to continued frustrations with Fortnite’s BRUTE mechs, Epic Games has issued a clarification regarding their design philosophy. “The mission of Fortnite is to bring players of all skill levels together” is Epic’s core message, and BRUTEs, according to Epic, were implemented in part to further this mission. Epic stated that players who previously struggled to get eliminations are now acquiring more, while eliminations for other players have remained stable....

Today Compile Hear revealed another trailer of its upcoming JRPG Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord. This time around, we get the introduction of two relevant characters that will be featured in the game, the heroine Tiara, and her fairy partner, Cui.
