A former Rare developer is releasing a brand new beat ‘em up game.

Long for the days of Streets of Rage? Pine for the many hours spent playing Double Dragon? Or how about the glorious satisfaction of smashing face in Final Fight? Then maybe this new beat ‘em up game is the one for you.

Titled Raging Justice, this brand new 2D side-scrolling Rage-clone is sure to satisfy every violent, two-dimensional urge you possess.

You play as either the titular Nikki Rage or Rick Justice, maverick cops in a town taken over by a mysterious crime lord. Neither of you play by the rules, despite ostensibly being the ones enforcing them, so you take to the streets and just start smashing heads. Y’know, as you do when your city is overrun with crime and criminal oligarchs.

What’s immediately striking about the trailer video is the animation. This game really tries to evoke the same feeling of playing Streets of Rage on the Sega Genesis by only creating two-dimensional sprites. They’re incredibly detailed, and there’s even lighting effects to make it seem three dimensional, but there’s no actual depth to the animation. It also seems like the dev team deliberately dropped a few frame here and there to give it a certain claymation-like quality a la ClayFighter. It’s a unique mashup for sure.

Along with the usual skull-cracking attacks, both characters will have access to weapons, vehicles (including a lawnmower), and a warrant system that will allow the player to decide whether to beat the boss to within an inch of their lives or just arrest them. “Arrest warrants will be issued,” says the game’s website. “Will you arrest the criminals, or pummel them to the ground? The path you choose has consequences.”

Raging Justice is being developed by a husband and wife duo Nic and Anna Makin of Makin Games. Nic is a former Rare developer that worked on Perfect Dark Zero and does game development in his spare time. Anna handles marketing and publishing, which means we have her to thank for getting this beat ‘em up gem released on all platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam.

The game is set to release sometime later in 2018, so stay tuned.
