The creepy and classic horror action of Five Nights at Freddy’s is heading to the Nintendo Switch on November 29, with all three of the first games in the series releasing on the same day. The series as a whole is another in a long line of horror titles released on the Switch, with other notable titles being Outlast, the Resident Evil series, and most recently, the Amnesia collection.
Five Nights at Freddy’s became a surprise hit within the horror genre of games upon its formal release in 2014. The gameplay consists of playing a character who is a night-time employee in a place that has some manner of connection with Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, which is meant to be loosely themed after restaurants like Chuck E. Cheese’s. In some games the player takes on the role of a security guard, but other games feature different positions. Inside these places are life-size animatronic characters with murderous minds of their own.
The gameplay is simple compared to other games in the survival horror genre. The animatronics wander the building at night and kill the player if they can reach him. As such, your goal is to defend against the animatronics with tools meant to keep them away from you. In all games, one must complete and monitor their resources to survive the night.
As the name of the game implies, players need to survive for a total of five nights, each becoming more difficult than the last. Unlike most horror games on the Switch, players are quite passive in the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, using monitors and tools to see what is coming and trying to breach the office.
Although the first three games are being ported onto the Nintendo Switch, there are more that could also be released in the future. The game has additional games in the series-as well as spin-offs, books, and a film that has been delayed but is still in development. As all the games in the series have been relatively well received, there is a real opportunity to see more of these games on the Switch.
Fans looking for a fresh take on the horror genre would do well to check out Five Nights at Freddy’s. Although the gameplay is more simplistic than other survival horror games, the action is still nerve racking as players try to survive each night.
