As a Knight of Seiros, Shamir Nevrand differs greatly from your typical students, as she’s actually one of the few playable characters to not be a student at all. She’s introduced early on in her up-front, blunt manner, and quickly becomes one of your strongest allies.
Her backstory and origin are shrouded in mystery, and her lack of expression and dislike for too much interaction makes her quite the intriguing archer. What facts about Shamir are left unnoticed by the eyes of most players?
10 The Outlier
Placing her trust and allegiance to the Church usually shows affiliation to the respective religion, but Shamir surprisingly shows an outward atheistic approach. Knowing Rhea’s nature of those who oppose the Church, it’s a little worrisome to see her so nonchalant about it.
Although, Rhea respects and looks past Shamir’s religious stances, as Shamir pledges her loyalty to the Knights of Seiros regardless, and Rhea trusts her ability to withhold the wellbeing of the Monastery with utmost skill and loyalty.
9 Hailing From Dagda
Shamir’s homeland is the country of Dagda, a land with a historical reputation for war and conflict. After fleeing Dagda early on in her life, she settled at the Officer’s Academy after gaining Rhea’s kind support. She often speaks in a neutral stance about her home country, instead choosing to focus on repaying her debt to Rhea.
When someone brings up her political affiliations, she simply states that she doesn’t hold any ill will towards anyone but the Imperial Army, and wants to live a simple life. Even in her support conversation with Petra, she disregards the fact of Fódlan being her potential enemy and chooses to live only by her own accord.
8 Shamir’s Namesake
Most characters in Three Houses have a first, middle, and last name, but Shamir lacks a middle name. “Shamir” is an Aramaic name meaning “flint” or “sentinel”, but “Nevrand” doesn’t seem to have many connections.
“Shamir” also has ties to the Jewish faith, being a magical worm that King Solomon used to create the first Jerusalem Temple. The worm is said to be able to cut through virtually anything, not unlike how Shamir’s arrows seem to pierce through just about anything and anyone.
7 Two Different Characters, One Shared Voice
Within Three Houses’ amazing cast of memorable voice actors, Allegra Clark is unique in the fact that she doesn’t voice just one, but two different characters. Voicing Dorothea and Shamir, she does an excellent job of differentiating the personalities of the two in their dialogue.
During her interview with Anime Impulse, she stated the difficulties and intricacies of voicing two different characters, especially in the case of their drastically opposite character interactions. She expressed some ease in the fact of her characters being similar to herself, showing her versatility and skill as a voice actor of many different faces.
6 The Not-So-Popular Girl
Nintendo has a longstanding series of popularity polls conducted for Three Houses within their Nintendo DREAM Magazine, in which Shamir, unfortunately, placed near the bottom of the cast.
Although she was the most popular character from the Church of Seiros, she still only landed in 17th place, a step down from her previous 12th and 14th placements. She probably prefers this placement regardless, as Shamir tends to keep to herself and stay out of the limelight as much as possible.
5 Along For The Ride
Most students in Three Houses can be recruited into any house, eliminating the need for picking specific houses based solely on your favorite characters. Shamir is also able to be recruited into any house, and with relative ease to boot.
Other recruitable units will at least require some sort of level in whatever weapon or area they specialize in, but Shamir is way more laid back about it, only requiring Byleth to be at level 15 or higher. This will happen naturally over the course of the story, and her great stats will make her a prime choice for any playthrough.
4 A Developer Favorite
In a GameSpot interview with some of the team members who developed Fire Emblem: Three Houses, some questions arose about the favorite characters of the game directors themselves. Toshiyuki Kusakihara chose to stay neutral, stating that “As the director of the game, It’s almost like, you know, I am the teacher because I helped to create them. So I have to say that I love all the students.”
Genki Yokota, however, gave some insight into one of his favorites. He states his stance that none of the students are really unlikeable, but that he really likes Shamir. For what reasons though, we may never know.
3 Personal Preferences
Just as no one person will appreciate a throwing knife as a Christmas gift, as Shamir would, every character in Three Houses has their own list of likes and dislikes. Shamir’s tastes lie in the more practical side of things with material goods.
Shamir likes gambling, money, and, obviously, archery. As for things she’d prefer to stay away from, her tough demeanor seems to crumble around certain bugs like centipedes and spiders, and she puts nasty bugs on the same level as sweet talkers like Sylvain.
2 Nobles, Keep Your Distance
Expressed in her support conversations, Shamir has a true distaste for those of Noble upbringing. Her former occupation before becoming an instructor at the academy was as a mercenary, where she would have to constantly lick the boots of Nobles to get by.
In Three Houses the aspect of Nobility is brought up quite frequently, serving as a cornerstone of conflict between those with power and money, and those who were unlucky enough to be born into a lower class.
1 What Does The Future Hold?
If Shamir becomes your most beloved character by the end of the war, you may take her to be your eternal partner. However, Shamir can be placed with a multitude of different characters, some of which ultimately just don’t seem plausible.
She can only be wed with Byleth and Hubert, but she may choose to journey alongside characters like Claude, Caspar, Dedue, Catherine, and Leonie. The most humorous one is her ending with Raphael, as the two form a crime-fighting, thieving duo to rob those who victimize others.
