There’s yet another Final Fantasy XV spinoff game in development, and this time it’s a mobile MMORPG.
Final Fantasy XV was released way back in 2016, and at the time, it received both critical and commercial success. Fans loved the fact that it was a Final Fantasy game that didn’t have an overly complicated plot – it was just you and a bunch of dudes on a super long road trip. How cool is that?
It was so cool that Square Enix turned the game into its own media franchise. There was an anime adaptation (Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV), a feature film (Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV), and three mobile games including a beat-’em-up (Justice Monsters Five), a strategy MMO (Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire), and even a simplified version of the game with chibified characters (Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition).
Some folks even prefer Pocket Edition over the original.
If that wasn’t enough, we’re told that another FFXV game is now in development. Called Final Fantasy XV Mobile, the game will be an MMORPG set in a parallel universe in which you and your friends basically replace Noctis and the main cast of the game. It starts shortly after Prince Noctis begins his journey on the royal road, and then it goes to many of the same places. However, it will also feature an expanded world with new areas such as the Great Pagoda and “continents floating in the skies.” Whatever that might be.
The game is being made by Korean dev Joyful Space of Creation (JSC), as well as Chinese studio GAEA. Both have worked with Square Enix on separate mobile projects. The game will be published in China by Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group, although a global release is planned for later.
Unlike Pocket Edition, FFXV Mobile seems to be using the same art assets as the original game. It also will be built using the Unreal 4 engine, so expect it to be pretty – at least, for a mobile game.
No release date has been set, but the first trailer is expected to arrive later in 2020.
