The Final Fantasy series is making the jump into the world of theatrical musicals, as Final Fantasy Brave Exvius The Musical has been announced and is due to run in Japan in 2020.
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is a mobile spin-off of the main Final Fantasy series that has been downloaded over forty million times. The game has an original setting and follows the story of Rain, Fina, and Lasswell, but the real draw is the crossovers with other Square Enix properties, including ones outside of the Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius has also included crossovers with real-life celebrities, such as Ariana Grande and Katy Perry.
The popularity of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius has led to it being adapted for the stage. NLAB.ITmedia has revealed that Final Fantasy Brave Exvius The Musical is due to debut in 2020. The musical will run in the Tennozu Ginga Theater in Tokyo from March 6-15 and will move to the AiiA 2.5 Theater Kobe for a run lasting from March 20-29. The director of the musical is Fumiya Matsuzaki, who also directed Mobile Suit Gundam 00- Revival by Destruction Re: Build. There is currently no word regarding the cast of the musical.
It might seem like a strange idea to turn a Final Fantasy mobile game into a musical, but musical theatre is a huge industry in Japan, which explains why numerous anime and video games have been adapted for the stage. The modern Persona games have received the musical treatment, as have Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and the Phoenix Wright series.
The music of the Final Fantasy series is among the best in the history of video games and there have been plenty of live Final Fantasy music concerts over the years. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius The Musical marks the first time that an entry in the series has received an actual musical and it might lead to other stage adaptations if it has a successful run. The costume design departments of Japan should be shaking in fear, as they might be tasked with adapting the outfits designed by Yoshitaka Amano and Tetsuya Nomura for real-life stage actors.
