Although Final Fantasy XII was a bit of a sleeper hit compared to some of the more popular titles like VII, X, or VII. It took a lot of risks compared to its predecessors. The artistic style strays away over-the-top colorful fantasy, the combat style was unlike any other, and the story was one of political intrigue. The grittier feel of XII made it a standout for better or for worse.

One thing almost all fans agree on though is that the cast of characters is more polished as a whole. They are no-nonsense pirates, orphans of war, and political exiles. The baggage each character carries and their resilience in overcoming it made a lasting impression on Final Fantasy fans. Love for the series spawned several impressive recreations of the characters. In celebration of the masterpiece that is XII, here are 10 cosplays that look just like the game.

8 NicaCosplay’s Penelo

This adorable pig-tailed childhood friend of Vaan’s was brought to life when NicaCosplay posted her cosplay on her DeviantArt page. Although the game render of Penelo has much shorter bangs, her signature gravity-defying hairstyle shines through beautifully here. We think the costume suits Nica perfectly. Especially because Penelo has large blue eyes and an endearing smile, just like her.

Nica has also cosplayed Mercy from Overwatch, Vanille from Final Fantasy XIII, and Yuuki from Sword Art Online. We must say though, of all of her cosplays, her Tinkerbelle has us believing in fairies.

7 Vertor Art’s Balthier

Vertor is a Polish photographer with an extensive portfolio on DeviantArt. Although he does not appear to have any other cosplays on his profile, we are glad he chose to portray the dashing sky pirate Balthier.

With his twin pistols and gold-filigree armor, Vertor looks just like his in-game inspiration. According to the cosplayer, the leading man is only his third costume ever made. Making any costume from Final Fantasy XII is a feat even for a veteran. Vertor truly is a one-of-a-kind talent.

6 AmenoKitaru’s Vaan

AmenoKitaru on DeviantArt posted a set of photos that made Final Fantasy XII fans everywhere lose their minds. His costume is award-winning having snagged Runner-Up Best Costume at Supanova Brisbane 2011 and Best Armour at Animania Mini 2012. According to the cosplayer, the entire outfit took only 4 days and fifteen dollars to make. It’s hard to believe he only needed to use scrap fabric to create such a stunning costume.

The 32-year-old Sydney native has also cosplayed as Odin from Final Fantasy XIII, Kilik from Soul Calibur, Aikuro Mikisugi from Kill la Kill, among others.

5 SledgeHammerCosplay’s Judge Gabranth

Everyone loves cosplaying the heroes, but antagonists are just as important to making Final Fantasy so much fun. Judge Magister Gabranth is a powerful character: the brother of party-member Basch and loyal servant to the Empire that destroyed his home. When the final encounter with him occurs, it is an emotional moment for all involved.

Although Gabranth the character is a broken man beneath his facade, we love the image of him fishing with his sword. Perhaps in an alternate timeline, Noah could have been at peace. SledgeHammerCosplay is a talent followed by other famous cosplayers such as December Wynn and Tiffany Gordon. Looking at his images as Maui from Moana and Colonel Sanders from KFC Dating Simulator, it’s not hard to see why!

4 CyberZombie’s Belias the Gigas

Neither hero or antagonist, Belias the Gigas is the first Esper obtained in the Final Fantasy XII storyline. First encountered as a boss fight in the Tomb of Raithwall, he becomes summonable by any party member after unlocking him in the Sky Pirate’s Den. Non-humanoid monsters are difficult to cosplay accurately, but CyberZombie’s rendition is no doubt awesome.

The 25-year-old is a hairdresser by trade, selling wig commissions on Etsy in addition to crafting her costumes. Some of her past work includes Charle from Fairy Tail, Yugiri from Zombieland Saga, and Carmilla from Fate Grand Order.

3 PurpleDemonCosplay’s Fran

PurpleDemon’s stands out for that lovely headpiece and thick white wig. Fran’s hair is huge, and recreating that effect without the wig looking too bulky is no easy feat. Those ears are also amazing, looking the most like real fur of any we’ve seen yet.

This cosplayer describes herself as a big Square Enix fan, with most of her costumes coming from one of their many game titles. Her Instagram has photos of her dressed as all the Final Fantasy ladies, including Yuna, Lunafreya, Aerith, and Tifa.

2 Tierza89’s Princess Ashe

Ashelia B’nargin Dalmasca is the only daughter of King Raminas and the rightful heir to Dalmasca’s throne. The fierce and independent princess is a beloved heroine and considered by many to be the true protagonist (over Vaan) of Final Fantasy XII. Ashe is seen in three outfits in the game. The one portrayed here is her wedding gown, seen in her union with Lord Rasler. We think this cosplayer looks just like Ashe as seen in the first part of the game.

Tierza89 only has 406 followers on her Instagram, and we believe she deserves more. She cosplays as Padme Amidala from Star Wars,  Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, and Vanea from Xenoblade Chronicles.

1 ChibiDudeCosplay’s Vaan

Impressive. That’s the only word for this picture. From the vest down to the boots, everything looks just like Vaan from the cutscenes. If there were ever a Final Fantasy XII live-action movie, we think ChibiDude is the perfect candidate.

ChibiDude is a non-binary cosplayer able to look picture-perfect as both traditionally male and female characters. Their other work includes Kurapika from Hunter X Hunter, 2B from Nier Automata, and Loki from the Marvel universe.
