Microsoft has announced the February 2020 lineup of “Games with Gold” titles and um…I’m not seeing a pattern here. Apart from the selection being a few years old (or older), these games have absolutely nothing in common. The most noteworthy of them would be the Xbox original Star Wars Battlefront and 2018’s Call of Cthulu.
While EA’s own Battlefront II has come around in terms of quality and content, many still prefer the Pandemic developer duo from before the Xbox 360 generation. It might seem strange that the first Battlefront is on offer, but Microsoft actually gave out its sequel last April on Games with Gold. Unless we’re going to get repeats, there was likely nothing it could do.
The other games, though? They seem to have been pulled at random. What even is TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge? Its namesake event is an annual motorcycle race that has been going on for more than 100 years, but there was a video game based on it? It’s also funny that Fable Heroes is included since many weren’t fond of it.
Here’s a breakdown so you can plan out when to grab these games.
Xbox One
TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge - February 1 to February 29
Call of Cthulu - February 16 to March 15
Xbox 360/Backward Compatibility
Fable Heroes - February 1 to February 15
Star Wars Battlefront - February 15 - February 29
With the 2020 release schedule just about to kick off, Microsoft likely picked a few low key games to tide people over. There’s no real sense in offering massive open-world titles or fairly recent ones when most players are going to be eyeing the March rush.
At the same time, this selection just feels very disjointed. Microsoft could honestly stop Games with Gold and it wouldn’t feel like that big of a deal. Game Pass is a much better value for the money and offers a wider selection of titles that players can sample at their leisure. Considering Sony doesn’t really put effort into PlayStation Plus anymore, it might be better to drop the annual fee of Live Gold and simply focus on Game Pass.
