Someone has remade Zombies Ate My Neighbors in Doom II, and it’s pretty amazing.

For a certain generation of gamers, LucasArts was one of the best game developers around. Sure, they were probably best known for making various Star Wars-related games, but they were actually a prolific studio that churned out everything from World War II flight simulators to point-and-click adventure games like The Curse of Monkey Island. LucasArts games spanned every console and every PC operating system–right up until Disney closed the studio in 2013.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors is just another example of how far LucasArts strayed away from George Lucas’ films. It was a run-and-gun shooter for the SNES and Sega Genesis where you played as a pair of stereotypical ’80s kids during a zombie outbreak. For some reason, a water pistol, tomatoes, and fizzy drinks are sufficient to defeat the undead hordes, which sort of gives you an idea of the game’s tone.

The original came out in 1993 and was an instant classic. Doom II came out in 1994 and was similarly hailed by critics and players. Today, in the year of our lord 2020, someone has combined the two into one incredible masterpiece.

According to ModDB, we have user Dude27th to thank for this total conversion mod that transforms Doom II into a first-person version of Zombies Ate My Neighbors. The mod is a faithful recreation of Zombies in Doom II, complete with sprites based on the SNES graphics, authentic sounds, and even level layouts.

As with the original game, the objective of the Zombies Ate My Neighbors Doom II mod is to find all your neighbors and then escape to the next level. Along the way, you’ll find various weapons and items to help you in your journey ranging from a fire extinguisher to an honest-to-god bazooka. These neighbors are all apparently quite heavily armed and fire safety conscious.

You can check out the 3-level demo in the video above. Sadly, it appears that the project is on hold as the last time it was updated was back in July of last year. Hopefully someone else will pick up the project and bring it to completion, but in the meantime, enjoy the demo over on ModDB.
