Eons after its confirmation, Bethesda is finally ready to unleash the “Wastelanders” update upon Fallout 76. With a new trailer this morning, the company confirmed that the NPC adding update will be launching for its live-service title on April 7, 2020, for all platforms. In addition to that game-changing add-on, the Steam version of Fallout 76 (which was confirmed in the middle of last year) will also be launching on the same day.
In a weird bit of platform gating, users will not be able to transfer their atoms or Fallout 1st membership between the Bethesda.net and Steam versions of the game. Anything purchased from the Atomic Shop will be shared, but not the ridiculous paid subscription that some may have wasted cash on. That seems like a deliberate omission to get people to double up on 1st if you ask me.
If you’re worried about having to spend money on “Wastelanders,” don’t be. In a post on its official website, Bethesda reiterates that this update will be free to all owners of Fallout 76. Two bundles filled with pointless extras will be available for purchase should you feel the need to waste more money on this title.
After a disastrous launch, Bethesda has kept at Fallout 76 in the hopes of regaining fan trust. Many were displeased with the state the game released in and the game kept drawing controversy for the numerous blunders related to its marketing. It didn’t help that server stability was terrible, making it hard to even play the game.
Somehow, Fallout 76 has avoided becoming a laughing stock. It’s too early to tell if “Wastelanders” will be the big update that finally makes everything click, but it does seem to restore the features that Fallout fans wanted from the start. In a series all about interacting with survivors of a nuclear apocalypse, it was odd that no one existed in this world.
I can only hope for the fans still invested that Bethesda really does deliver this time. No one should have to waste $60 on a dud of a game sold off the back of a studio’s legacy. It would be a shame to see this once proud series sink even further.
