Mortal Kombat 11 brought some of the most drastic changes to the story yet. Deceased characters returned to the timeline merger, and other characters revisited younger versions of themselves.

Because many important events happened in the story, here’s a list to breakdown the most relevant spoilers you’ve heard by now. Warning: a lot of klassic characters met their end, but let’s get some miscellaneous spoilers out the way first.

10 A Few Characters Konfirmed Dead Or MIA Via Interaction Dialogues

A new Mortal Kombat game meant fan favorites did not return for the eleventh installment. Some characters’ fates were disclosed during interaction dialogues when you are fighting the AI or another player. In an interaction between Shang Tsung and Kitana, the sorcerer said he “killed Ermac and stole Jerrod’s soul.” This aligns with the cameo Ermac had in the Krypt where he fell on a pike and died shortly after.

Takeda Takahashi, Scorpion’s pupil, and Kenshi’s son, was part of the four-man Special Forces team in Mortal Kombat X with Cassie Cage, Jacqui Briggs, and Kung Jin. Scorpion shared multiple interaction dialogues with Jacqui and Jax regarding Takeda and marriage, but one particular interaction with Cassie stuck out:

Scorpion: Where is Takeda Takahashi?

Cassie: Sorry, that info’s classified.

Scorpion: Not from his grandmaster!

An unsatisfying answer, but that is the most information the game gave players regarding where he is. Where Kung Jin is may also be MIA. He was mentioned once in an interaction between Raiden and Kung Lao, confirming Raiden is the only person who knows where the Shaolin archer is.

9 Sonya Blade Dies

The story mode opened with Cassie being promoted to Commander by Sonya Blade, her mother. Cassie, Sonya, Raiden, and Jacqui are immediately deployed to Netherrealm to destroy the Revenant’s headquarters.

While Sonya and some soldiers were setting up explosives, Cassie and Jacqui were taking care of some evil goons. Revenant Liu Kang decides to make an appearance and collapses the underground chambers on Sonya and her men. Crushed and unable to move, Sonya ordered her daughter to escape with the rest of her squad. Despite Cassie’s emotional objections, the squad was able to escape the Netherrealm castle with Raiden. Sonya detonated the explosives and sacrificed herself.

8 Kitana Becomes the New Kahn of Outworld

Shao Kahn and Kotal Kahn clashed, but the fight ends with Shao Kahn permanently crippling Kotal. Shao Kahn is about to deliver the final blow before being interrupted by Kitana. The two fight, and the Edenian Princess ends the Outworld Emperor by slicing him across the face.

Many fans initially thought she killed Shao Kahn, but Shawn Kittelsen, the narrative lead on the Mortal Kombat 11 story, said on Twitter that Kitana “blinded” Shao Kahn.

Regardless, Kitana finally got her revenge on the man that killed her father, made her mother suffer, and destroyed her home realm. Kotal put the icing on the cake by ceding his throne to her since he was incapacitated and unable to rule. The Edenian princess became the Kahn(um) of Outworld.

7 Kano Dies (Both Of Them)

Sonya finally gets what she’s wanted since the first Mortal Kombat! When Cassie Cage succeeds in busting Younger Johnny Cage and Younger Sonya out of Kano’s ring, both black arms dealers disrupt their escape. Younger Sonya faces off against Younger Kano, and Older Kano is about to disembowel Johnny. “Don’t forget. It’s two-for-one. He dies, so does your little girl!” Kano threatens Sonya, making the lieutenant smirk.

Unfortunately, Kano just told her that if your past self is killed, then your future self is done as well. Sonya headshots the Younger Kano. The same hole appears in Older Kano’s noggin before he fades into temporal sand. The segment ends with Younger Cage and Sonya setting up for a potential romance.

6 Jax Joins the Baddies

Jax had enough. He was retired from a decorated career, alone without his lover and his daughter is in constant danger. Kronika sniffed out his suffering and decides to use it against him; a new era means a new opportunity to create a better life for himself and his family.

When Jacqui and Younger Jax is about to leave Shang Tsung’s Island with Kronika’s Crown, they are confronted by the Older Jax, much to Jacqui’s shock and disappointment. Of course, the player has to option to fight Older Jax with Younger Jax or Jacqui.

5 Scorpion Dies

Hanzo Hasashi’s story comes to an end. After Grandmaster Hisashi (current timeline) convinced Scorpion to turn away from his path of vengeance, D’Vorah poisons the vulnerable Shirai Ryu master. Scorpion slices off her—sends the Ky’Tinn scurrying away, but the damage is already done.

Scorpion promises his dying self that he will return to Earthrealm, notify them of Kharon’s aid and continue the legacy of the Shirai Ryu. As the grandmaster lays in his past self’s arms, he utters “The new Shirai Ryu are worthy. It’s heart, not blood, that makes them warriors.”

4 All According to Kronika

A confrontation with Liu Kang triggers a memory in Raiden: a scene from Mortal Kombat (2011) to be more specific. When Shao Kahn steps foot into Earthrealm, Raiden keeps Liu Kang from attacking the Outworld Emperor.

Enraged by Raiden’s ineptitude, Liu Kang is ready to attack the Thunder God, even kill him, if it meant getting to Shao Kahn. Then, the scene is replayed over and over in different locations. Liu Kang and Raiden don different outfits. A conflict meant to happen in every timeline thanks to Kronika. She has manufactured every single outcome towards Liu Kang and Kronika fighting. If the two are in conflict, that means they cannot come together to become the ultimate threat against her (which is something straight out of Dragon Ball Z).

3 Liu Kang and Raiden Fuse

This was what Kronika did not want to happen, what she spent countless timelines trying to prevent. After Raiden defeats Revenant Liu Kang, he tells the undead Shaolin that he would rather save him than kill him.

Merging his thunderous magic into Liu Kang’s body, the two form together into one. Sporting electric dragon tattoos and Raiden’s hat on his back, Liu Kang is reborn into Fire God Liu Kang; and he’s ready to take on the Titan of Time.

2 Liu Kang Becomes the Protector of Earthrealm

After the player defeats Kronika as Fire God Liu Kang, the Shaolin Monk will land a finishing blow on her. Her body becomes crystallized, and Liu Kang destroys her body into pink and red bits.

There are two possible endings, however. If the player loses one round to Kronika, they will get the good ending. This is the first time in the mainline video game continuity where players see Raiden as a mortal. Raiden informs Liu Kang of his retirement, and the Fire God is the new Protector of Earthrealm. Liu Kang is nervous, but Raiden offers his guidance.

In the secret ending where the player loses no rounds to Kronika, Raiden suggests Liu Kang bring back Kitana to rule by his side.

1 The Timeline Will Be Reset

While Liu Kang defeated Kronika and gained control of the Sands of Time, he couldn’t stop Kronika from erasing the merged timeline. The last eight years of Mortal Kombat were erased, and a new timeline will have to be constructed. In the secret ending, Kitana warned Liu Kang that evil will still take root—even if they make the most well-intentioned timeline. Liu Kang still proceeds, hopeful for what the two of them will create.

Mortal Kombat 11 has big implications for the future of the franchise, especially when it comes to story. It is possible Netherrealm will set up for another reboot of the series due to the timeline reset, but players and fans have to wait until Mortal Kombat 12 to see.
