For over 20 years, video game publisher and developer Square Enix (formerly known as separate companies, Square and Enix) has delivered top-rated role-playing game franchises. Without Square Enix, gamers wouldn’t be more than 40 titles deep in the iconic Final Fantasy series. It is also the company behind ever-popular titles Life is Strange, Tomb Raider, Just Cause, and more.

As always, Square Enix has a busy year ahead. In his annual New Year’s letter, company president Yosuke Matsuda promised to enter the new era of gaming with Square Enix’s support of cloud gaming. He noted that 2020 will be a year of changes and Square Enix is ready to take on these new challenges. In addition, Square Enix plans to continue its “steady progress on developing next-generation console titles.” The company already has a few major releases lined up for the coming months. Here are eight Square Enix games that fans can look forward to this year.

8 Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind DLC

7 Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered

The original Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was released on GameCube in 2004. The game received mixed reviews, with some critics stating that they enjoyed the game overall but found flaws in little elements like the multiplayer feature. Square Enix announced in 2018 that they would be taking a long-awaited second try at the game via a remastered edition.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Remastered Edition is expected to be available on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, as well as iOS and Android devices. Square Enix will tackle the multiplayer complaints by adding cross-platform online multiplayer. In addition, the remastered version will include better graphics, new music, new voice acting, and new dungeons. The remastered edition was expected in 2019, but a delay was announced in September. It is now expected to arrive on January 23.

6 Final Fantasy VII Remake

The 1997 classic, Final Fantasy VII, is making a comeback this year. The original title, released on PlayStation, sold millions of copies within days of its release and was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews. Final Fantasy VII’s success led the game to several awards that year.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was requested and rumored about for years before it was finally announced in 2015. The game is set to be released in episodic installments and will tell Cloud Strife’s original story. According to ScreenRant, last year, Matsuda himself admitted that this remake is one of Square Enix’s most ambitious projects to date, but it will be well worth the wait. The first installment of Final Fantasy VII Remake is set for release on PlayStation 4 on March 3.

5 Trials of Mana

Back when Square Enix was just Square in 1995, the company released action RPG Trials of Mana on the Super Famicom. It was the sequel to the 1993 title Secret of Mana and the second game in the Mana trilogy. The game follows six different playable characters, each with their own full storylines, and three lengthy plotlines.

The variety in gameplay increased Trials of Mana’s replay value. Although the game didn’t receive as much recognition as other Square Enix titles, it is still regarded as a Super Famicom classic. A remake of Trials of Mana was announced back in June when the original game was rereleased with a collection. The remake is expected to arrive on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows on April 24.

4 Marvel’s Avengers

In addition to classic remakes, Square Enix has a few originals coming out in 2020. One of those originals is the single-player and co-op adventure Marvel’s Avengers, which will be hitting Google Stadia, Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Square Enix acts as the publisher on this one, with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal as developers.

Marvel’s Avengers brings a number of characters across the Marvel Universe to the video gaming realm, including, of course, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Hawkeye, Hank Pym, Ms. Marvel, and more. An overview video released last year revealed that Ms. Marvel will play an important role in bringing the team back together after a disaster. The game is slated to feature an all-new storyline unrelated to Marvel films, which fans will surely love. Marvel’s Avengers will be available on all platforms on May 15.

3 Outriders

Square Enix and People Can Fly are calling their new collaboration, Outriders, a “dark, modern shooter.” The game will be a co-op, drop-in-drop-out shooter for 1-3 players, set in a science fiction universe filled with creatures called Outriders. As Marvel fans know, Outriders are mindless aliens that appeared in Infinity War, though Square Enix has not confirmed a connection between the game and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Not much else is known about Outriders, but it’s coming from the same developers as the successful Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgement, so it’s highly anticipated. Outriders will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC sometime this summer.

2 Circuit Superstars

Square Enix hasn’t published far too many racing games, the latest one being Gravel in 2018, but they’re taking on the task in a whole new way with Circuit Superstars. This colorful motorsport game developed by Original Fire Games is slated to combine arcade-style racing with “more realistic tactile driving physics,” according to Square Enix.

The game will take a look at racing trends throughout history, from “’60s-style single seaters to modern GTs.” Square Enix promises that Circuit Superstars will attract both longtime racing fans and newcomers. The game is set to hit PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and Xbox One sometime in 2020.

1 Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2, the sequel to 2015’s Dying Light, is being developed by Techland and published by Square Enix. This survival horror action RPG, set in a world overrun by a zombie apocalypse, picks up 15 years after Dying Light and is slated to feature a brand new protagonist. Dying Light 2 is also said to feature twice as many parkour moves as the original game.

In total, the game has about 100 hours worth of content, and the developers are reportedly already planning four years’ worth of DLC for after the initial release. Dying Light 2 is expected to be available on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in Spring 2020.
