2020 is slated to be a huge year for Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). On top of some pretty big game releases coming up, the Sony Corporation subsidiary is gearing up for the release of the long-awaited PlayStation 5. Sony’s PlayStation consoles have clawed their way to the top of the video game industry in the last decade, so it’s no surprise that fans have been talking about the new console pretty much since it was first announced at the beginning of last year.
SIE has already teased a few details about the next-generation PlayStation, such as the logo and a few details about its features. Mysterious leaks have also given fans an idea of the console’s product design, and a potential holiday 2020 launch for the PlayStation 5. In the meantime, SIE has some great PlayStation 4 titles coming out this year, which are all rumored to be backwards compatible with the new console. Here’s every announced SIE game coming in 2020 that you should be on the look out for.
7 Dreams
Make your creative Dreams come true in Media Molecule and SIE’s game creation system! In a rare move, Sony made the game available for early access in April 2019. In December, Sony announced that Dreams would officially released in its entirety during Winter 2020.
Dreams is a lot of things. Not only can players try out experimental games from other users, they can also create their own games, music, 2-D art, 3-D sculptures, and more. Much like Media Molecule’s other success, LittleBigPlanet, the game’s goal is to allow users to “play, create, share.” There aren’t many limits to what people can do in this unique gaming experience. In fact, a former Sony executive, Shawn Layden, said that Dreams has the potential to “change game creation as we know it.”
Dreams is scheduled to be available on PlayStation 4 on February 14.
6 Iron Man VR
Iron Man VR allows players to step into the Armored Avenger’s suit for an original adventure. The game, developed by Camouflaj and published by SIE, was revealed during the State of Play online presentation in Match 2019. It was originally planned for a 2019 release, but was delayed until 2020.
Iron Man VR follows Tony Stark as he is attacked by an anti-corporation hacker named Ghost who is out to ruin Stark Industries. Iron Man is also slated to appear in Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers later this year, but Iron Man VR might see more success just given the popularity of PlayStation VR.
Iron Man VR is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 4 on February 28.
5 Nioh 2
Team Ninja’s Nioh was released on PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in 2017 to generally favorable reviews. The second installment in this action RPG series, Nioh 2, began an open beta in November, with a promise that players who test the game will receive a free in-game item upon its official release.
Nioh 2 is said to be a prequel to the original and set in the 1500s. The PlayStation website teases that players will “defy mortality” and “release inner darkness” in Sengoku era Japan as a half-human warrior.
Nioh 2 will be available on PlayStation 4 on March 13.
4 MLB: The Show 20
SIE San Diego Studio’s MLB The Show 20 is the 15th entry in the ever-popular MLB The Show series. Chicago Cubs superstar Javier “El Mago” Baez was announced as this year’s cover star, making him the very first Cubs player to make it onto the game’s cover. When the news was revealed back in October, Baez tweeted that his “dream came true.”
The closed beta will run from January 14 to January 20. Eligible players will be able to download the beta on January 13. The standard edition, the digital deluxe edition, the MVP edition, and the Anniversary edition are all now available to pre-order.
The full game is set to be released on PlayStation 4 on March 17 (but players who pre-order the special editions get access four days earlier).
3 Predator: Hunting Grounds
Predator: Hunting Grounds is an asymmetric multiplayer shooter that takes place in the Predator franchise and marks the first Predator game in 10 years (following Alien vs. Predator in 2010). Developed by Illfonic in collaboration with 20th Century Fox, the game is said to draw inspiration from the 1987 film of the same name.
Predator: Hunting Grounds requires online play and a PlayStation Plus membership to use multiplayer. Players can choose to be either a member of a Fireteam or the Predator itself to see both sides of the action.
Predator: Hunting Grounds is available for pre-order now and will be available for PlayStation 4 and Windows on April 24.
2 The Last of Us Part II
Naughty Dog and SIE’s The Last of Us in 2013 received “universal acclaim,” according to Metacritic, and became the PlayStation 3’s fifth highest-selling game. It was so popular, that a remastered version was released just one year later for the PlayStation 4. Now, it’s no surprise that when The Last of Us Part II was announced in 2016, fans went crazy. It’s one of the most anticipated releases coming this year.
The Last of Us Part II allows players to control 19-year-old Ellie, as opposed to Joel, the main playable character of the original game. Playing as Ellie is said to allow more exploration of the game’s environments because Ellie is smaller and thus can jump and climb farther. The beloved “Listen Mode” is also set to come back in the sequel, allowing players to zero in on enemies through a heightened hearing and spatial awareness.
The Last of Us Part II is slated to hit PlayStation 4 on May 29.
1 Ghost of Tsushima
Sucker Punch Productions developed Ghost of Tsushima, an action-packed, explorative open world adventure. The developers and SIE have been suspiciously secretive about this major release for some time now, but a trailer was unveiled during the 2019’s The Game Awards show. Currently, Ghost of Tsushima is only available for pre-order in the U.K.
Ghost of Tsushima follows the last samurai, Jin Sakai, on Tsushima Island during the Mongol invasion of Japan in the 1270s. Jin must learn a new fighting technique to take down the Mongol Empire and save Japan.
As of right now, Sucker Punch Productions and SIE have not zeroed in on a release date. Ghost of Tsushima is expected to arrive on PlayStation 4 in Summer 2020.
