Epic’s keeping the free games rolling for its Winter Sale and today’s pick is certainly interesting. Released earlier this year, Ape Out is currently up for grabs on the Epic Games Store. A title that mixes The Incredible Hulk with King Kong, the goal is to play as an orange ape and smash stuff. It kind of plays similarly to Hotline Miami, though without the gratuitous violence and existential plotline.
What’s more surprising is that this is completely unexpected. Being the newest title Epic has currently given out, I honestly didn’t see it coming. My initial guess was some kind of management sim, but Ape Out certainly makes more sense. This is the type of indie experience Epic is trying to foster on its platform, what with all the exclusives it keeps signing.
You’ll have until tomorrow, December 24, at 11:00 am EST/8:00 am PST to nab Ape Out. Considering how bananas it is, you’d have to be crazy to pass it up. It’s not even a long game, so you could easily finish it before Christmas and still make time for your Netflix binging when the family arrives.
Going by the above image, it seems as though Celeste will be tomorrow’s giveaway. What’s curious is that Epic already gave out Celeste back in August. My first thought was Below, but the logo is an exact match for the indie platformer. It seems that Epic will be repeating some of the handouts, an idea I also theorized about.
While that is a little bit of a bummer (it would have been cool to see different games each day), it’s not like Celeste is bad. The game is actually great and something everyone should play. If you happened to miss it the first time around, don’t sleep on it.
We’ve still yet to get confirmation of whether or not Epic will be skipping Christmas Day. If it does hand out some repeats, there’s a chance that no days will be missed and two of the off days will be previous freebies. That would definitely be a good way to get around having to fill 14 days.
