EA has said that it estimates the current console cycle install base to be 55 million, allowing us to work out how many Xbox One consoles have been sold to consumers.
“The console purchases are up through the end of calendar year ’15, our estimate is 55 million units out there which has exceeded virtually everyone’s forecast for the year and now almost 50% higher than previous console cycle so, all of that is very-very positive,” said EA CFO Blake Jorgensen during last night’s investor call.
While Microsoft hasn’t offered any indication of Xbox One sales in over a year, Sony has been happy to broadcast its PS4 success for all to hear – most recently stating 35.9 million PS4 consoles had been sold. The PS4 figure makes it quite simple to estimate Xbox One install base to be in the region of 19 million.
Now, 19 million is a great place for Xbox One to be, and Microsoft has said sales are up compared to the Xbox 360’s early years. It’s just that Sony has done so well with the PS4.
Microsoft said last night that whilst there was a “slight” decrease in Xbox One revenue for the quarter ended December 31, it actually sold more Xbox One systems than the prior year, but did so at a lower cost and therefore made less money.
Xbox Live continues to be a force, with 48 million active monthly users across the Xbox platforms. Nine million users joined the service between October and December.
