The 3D film Dragon Quest: Your Story will be debuting in the west on February 13, 2020. The date comes from Netflix, itself, with both its website and mobile apps now listing the date alongside a trailer. A listening for the film appeared earlier this month, so many were expecting to hear news in short order.
Based loosely on the events of Dragon Quest V, Your Story follows the journey of Luca as he attempts to save his mother. Aiding him will be his slime companion, Bianca, and a woman named Flora. Much like the game, the trio will need to overcome various monsters and dragons as they attempt to complete their travels.
Your Story first debuted in Japan back in August 2019. Acting more like an abridged version of V, Japanese fans were reportedly very disappointed with certain changes to significant plot points. The ending also drew a ton of ire with many considering it a slap in the face. I guess we’ll all have a chance to see when the film starts streaming in the US.
For a long period of time, films based around video game franchises were total garbage. Be it the cult-classic Mortal Kombat or the notoriously rushed Super Mario Bros., Hollywood just didn’t quite understand what made these properties so engaging. The more gamey elements were either stripped from the projects or blown up to extravagant proportions.
That all changed last year. Both Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and The Angry Birds Movie 2 showed that you could take a video game and turn it into a decent film. Hell, both are actually quite good in their own right, not relying too heavily on source material to the fault of casual viewers.
Whether or not Dragon Quest: Your Story bucks the trend of sloppy game films remains to be seen. It looks pretty similar to stuff that Bandai Namco has produced for Tekken, which isn’t a good sign. The animation is nice enough, but quality visuals can only propel a shoddy story for so long. Eventually, the cracks will show and you’ll be left with a pretty hollow experience.
